For the past few days, I've been working on a show halter for Royal, my 75th AQHA bay. The halter didn't fight me, but it was my first time using halter plates, and I was extra careful to make it my best. This definitely would be a good way to build on beginner halter skills. It also includes my first rolled throatlatch! Yesterday I finished it, and headed outside to take pictures :)
Then, it happened. Poor Royal slipped from my hands while I was turning him. It was a short fall, but onto concrete, and the results weren't pretty....at least no breaks I guess. He bouncer twice off the floor, and I'm not afraid to admit I winced each time.
The halter does fit Hershey, reasonably well at least. I guess he can go in a pinch, but I'll probably be looking for a replacement at Breyerfest, or some info on restoration...
Last year at BF2016, I took a workshop on making western halters, and Royal was my dummy to build on. He's turned out to be a favorite in my herd.
I would love to do an "oops" story collection, there's no way I'm the only one to do this... Send stories to me at amethyst.trails@gmail.com if you would like to be part of it :)
This halter also reminded me how my skiving has improved, with a nice big pile of shavings to show for it.
