Starts...and stops

Things have been crazy this week, but very little was hobby related. I won't bore you all with the details, but it was a busy, expensive, and stressful time. I was however, able to work on my arabian costume a very little bit, namely make conchos!

Using purple sculpey and some nail art gems, I made my first ever batch, for the breastcollar and halter. They baked at 275 (Fahrenheit) for 14 minutes, which seemed about right (Not crumbly, or scorched). Umfortunately, nail art gems are not heat proof, and melted into some weird shapes....

After that I made two batches at once, one to be like the original (jewels to be glued on after) and one with traditional decoration of shells (breastcollar size only).

In all honesty, the shells were a pain to make, and probably took longer than any other part of the process. After baking they were not a pretty crisp white anymore (Not sure if it was the baking, or if there was a small amount of something on my fingers).

There was some shrinkage in the other batch to go in, to the point some were unusable. Thank goodness for extras! I used a toothpick and super glue to apply the gems.

Sometimes it takes a few tries to get anything right, and this has certainly been no exception. I think my second batch of jeweled conchos will work, at least for now :) Though I still need another, maybe simple gems or pom poms?

Any costume makers in my audience? I would love to hear from you with tips, tricks, or even stories :)
Sorry again about the delay this week, but expect another post tuesday!
